An Detailed Scope of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels that can be severe enough that they interfere with the normal functioning and overall health of affected individuals.
While bipolar disorder can be difficult to manage, the good news is that there are multiple evidence-based treatments available to help. Our passionate and skilled team at True Life Care is here to help you get the care and support you need.
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by extreme mood, energy, and activity shifts. People with bipolar disorder often experience periods of intense emotional highs, called manic or hypomanic episodes, along with periods of deep sadness or hopelessness, called depressive episodes.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), bipolar disorder is a chronic condition that affects approximately 2-3% of the United States population. It usually appears in late adolescence or early adulthood and can significantly impact a person’s ability to function in daily life.
The Different Types of Bipolar Disorders
Bipolar disorder is a complex mental illness that can present in varying ways depending on the individual. However, there are three main types of bipolar disorders, which include:
Bipolar I Disorder
This type of bipolar disorder is primarily defined by manic episodes, although individuals may also experience depressive episodes at times. The severity of manic episodes can range from mild to severe and can cause significant impairment in daily life.
In some cases, manic episodes may involve symptoms such as delusions or hallucinations. Individuals with Bipolar I Disorder generally experience at least one manic episode that lasts for at least a week or may even necessitate hospitalization.
Bipolar II Disorder
Bipolar II is characterized by recurrent episodes of hypomania. In contrast to Bipolar I Disorder, individuals with Bipolar II Disorder do not experience full manic episodes but may experience longer periods of hypomania.
In addition to hypomanic episodes, individuals with Bipolar II Disorder also experience severe and disruptive episodes of depression that can significantly affect their day-to-day activities. These depressive episodes can cause changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Cyclothymic Disorder is characterized by persistent, chronic mood swings between hypomania and mild depression lasting at least two years. Though the symptoms of Cyclothymic Disorder are generally milder than those of Bipolar I or II, they can still significantly affect a person’s quality of life.
Additional Types of Bipolar Disorder
Apart from these three primary types of bipolar disorder, there are also other lesser-known types of bipolar disorder, such as bipolar disorder not otherwise specified (BP-NOS) and rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.
BP-NOS typically describes cases where an individual experiences symptoms of bipolar disorder that do not precisely match the diagnostic criteria for Bipolar I or II Disorder. On the other hand, rapid-cycling bipolar disorder is characterized by experiencing four or more episodes of mania, hypomania, or depression within a single year.
